"When they first bought it the new publisher was like, 'We’re not going to have any penis because women don’t want to look at penises,' and again, it nearly put them out of business," explains Collins. Eventually, the "formula applied to Playgirl" involved "more erections." Though, at another point in the evolution, in 1986-at a time when you'd think ideas of female sexual desire weren't so dated-the magazine, under new management, again made the same mistake about its readers' desires. Since selling magazines to this exact demographic was crucial to Playgirl's survival, it adapted.

"The thinking was that women didn’t want to see too much, and all these readers were like, we want to see actual penis." In 1973, deep into the sexual revolution, women (or men) buying a magazine for the explicit reason that it was full of hot dudes (to get off to), indeed wanted to see totally naked men. "So many people wrote in so angry there wasn’t actual penis," she said.

The first ever issue had no full dicks, at all, which (surprisingly!) disappointed readers, Jessanne Collins, who wrote How to Be a Playgirl and worked at the magazine from 2007 through 2008, when it shut down, told Atlantic Wire contributor Jen Doll for The Hairpin. What began as a women’s liberation magazine and morphed into a title more frequently bought by gay men, appears to be re-emerging as a more open space for anyone who would like to belong.Despite editors assuming that the women of America didn't want penises in their porn magazines, twice in the history of Playgirl, readers demanded more full frontal nudity, showing the power of the invisible hand even in the making of sex mags. With the last issue published (before being defuct) titled ‘Campus Hunks of Lauderdale’, it’s not hard to spot the difference in this new iteration with the inclusion of contributors such as the prolific Harley Weir. The new direction has come through instantly, of course. With publisher Jack Lindley Kuhns at the helm alongside an all-star creative team: Skye Parrott of Self-Service assumes the role of Editor-in-Chief while Alex Wiederin, has taken on Playgirl’s creative direction. Serving as a feminist response to mens magazines like Playboy, the magazine featured hairy, naked centrefold of cigar smoking men alongside their somehow tasteful erections in an attempt to further the women’s liberation movement and counter the objectification women face. Playgirl first launched as a subtle take on nudity in 1973.

What was once an archive of spreads of naked men and journalism angled towards women and feminism, with literary pieces penned by Maya Angelou, the 70s title has undergone a reiteration for 2020, and it’s as breathtaking as it is thought-provoking.Īs usual, Sevigny needs very little to exude sexiness, and here, as she gazes down Sorrenti’s softly-lit lens, the handlebar moustaches and plethora of penises of the heralded title feel a long way away from the original format of the magazine. The iconic Playgirl Magazine is back, and in line with it’s relaunch, Chloë Sevigny appears on the cover, naked, heavily pregnant and lensed by Mario Sorrenti.
